It's ... so ... big! And yes, that IS what she said because I just said it. Their coffee and espresso taste properly brewed - no burnt flavor or bitter aftertaste. Well done, baristas. We had coffee and tea drinks and they were all done well. We liked how friendly everyone was and how cozy and extensive the seating is. If I for some reason had to move to the Midwest, I'd seriously consider Iowa City for the Java House alone. Rockin'!

I went to a "the Java House" in Des Moines, it was a lot better. But I'm in Iowa City. Sunday trying to study at 10:00am, UI seemed to discourage students to hard work on school stuff so no library until 11:00am. Needing wifi and a morning drink to get awaken anyways so bf suggested the Java House. Turned out the students are a lot more motivated then the school thought to be - the Java House was very busy. The atmosphere itself reminded me of the one in Des Moines, indy try to look contemporarily city like place. Not a bad start. There were two registries open so we didn't wait long to be served - NOT! The dude who try to get our order is either new or plain incompentent of the task. I asked for a barry creme frappe and bf got a chai and bagel sandwich, for here. The order itself took him about 5 mins to type. Then "I need to give you a number", then "I can't find a number", then the girl took the number...what kind of coordination this is for a expectedly busy coffee place? Finally the chaos got taken care of. We found a bigger table to sit down. Wifi took F.O.Rever to get on, but if you're patient you will get it. There were 3 order of chai coming out about the same time, and all they did was to yell the drink (not like the name of the drink owner or something) at the store, which is okay - but what is the point of that stupid number system? We thought since we get a number, the stuff will be delivered, it was just the sandwich. So I went up and pick up my frappe and picked one out of the three iced chai standing there. "Oh, the one to go is with the frappe order". To go, that's right. I was like whatever and trying to put lid on my drink, and feeling bad cuz a bunch of other folks was trying to retrieve their drink yet was as confused as what was what on that little counter. The frappe was overfilled with creme (thanks for the generosity) so lid went on = drink spills everywhere. This blew my mind - while the customers (esp. me standing in front of them) are trying to figure out what they ordered out of the 10 drinks placed on a congested counter, one girl made this legendary looking (not) latte and had another girl taking picture for it, completely ignoring the waiting line. I was so pissed I was like, excuse me? Girls got the cue and went Oh sorry and whipped my drink. Sandwich came over eventually after all another layer the confusion - the sandwich delivering girl was given the wrong number. How ironic. After seeing her running around the place twice, I had to finally grab her. Food and drink wise - I can only say for the bagel sandwich and it was very delish! The pastry, to me, is just over priced with consider the portion. Maybe they are sooooo good but I don't think I'll come back and give another try... Who the heck manage this place? Your shop would have so much potential (you charge more than what a local Starbucks would charge but I am willing to support you b/c you no Starbucks) Your management is terrible, your staff are incapable of their job which truly boils down to your terrible management skill. I would strongly recommend you to get a management degree, not sure what you got (or you got anything at all).

Well there are not to many places that take this great of care of the cup of coffee you are about to drink! Wonderful pour over service, with a smile! Good things come to those who wait! IF you are in a hurry this is not the place for you! But sit down and enjoy the comfy couches or the huge back room with lots of outlets for working! They also do a live Iowa Public Radio show here called Java Blend live from the Java House in Iowa City! These shows are free and are really fun to both watch and I have gotten to play one as well! The food here is great, the staff is wonderful, the bathrooms are clean, and the coffee is about as good as it comes! I love this place!

Pros: 1. Excellent selection of pour over coffee - they have a rotating conversation brew that changes every few hours throughout the day. Great way to try some solid coffee. 2. The bakery items are always excellent with great variety. Special shout out to their delightful sugar cookies. 3. Free wifi. 4. Connected with the Heirloom Salad Company to get lunch and a drink at the same time. 5. Great loose leaf tea selection - they steep it for you there on the spot. Cons: 1. I personally do not like the style of the Java House side, much prefer the clean modern look of the Heirloom Salad side. 2. Since they use loose leaf tea (see pro #5 above), they do not give you the tea to resteep later. As a side note, they can be extremely busy during the school year, but are very open during the summer with fewer students around.

If you haven't had a Banana Bread Latte at The Java House in Iowa City, you're not living your life properly. Love this place, and it's organic options! Joe

Regular latte to go. Thumbs up! Great taste and very nice presentation. The staff was very nice and friendly.

OK first coffee, GOOD coffee second time. We really enjoyed our lattés and the space was very open, able for those with kids to let them play, studiers to study, and talkers to talk. My reduction of one star is because our first set of lattés were uneven and not very enjoyable. Consistency in coffee is very important, I hope all baristas are well trained!

Something about the way the girl at the counter couldn't seem to explain the coffee of the day or differences between the tea categories without reading the signs to us verbatim didn't make me fall in love with Java House. She giggled after responding to my tea question because she knew what she was saying didn't make any sense. I imagine a little extra training would do the trick! Now that the negative is out of the way, let me tell you about their mighty delicious and flavor-packed Masala tea! Hold on to your hats, it'll have you feeling refreshed in no time. I like mine with a drizzle of honey on top. Seating is plentiful - and by plentiful I mean you could fit four traditional coffee houses into this place. The walk to the bathroom was about two miles. Okay, not really, but it was close. Fun fact: they offer conversation coffees that change on the hour for folks to mix up what they're trying and learn about a new brew/bean.

The only thing you need to know: they do pourovers. Java House has the best pourover bar I've ever seen! They use fair-trade coffee beans and have found a well-balanced approach to please both coffee-snobs (hello) and "I like coffee, what's the difference?" patrons. A few things I'm not so thrilled about: The menu is confusing. I went probably twelve times before I figured out what exactly the conversation brew is. Did you know the conversation brew implies that depending on what time of day you are ordering, there is a different roast being served and you're supposed to ask the cashier to learn more about it? I LOVE the idea now that I know what the heck it means, but reading the menu has a definite learning curve. I've been disappointed a couple times on the quality control - there are a few baristas who rush the pourover process by dumping hot water on the grounds, waiting for it to stream through, then dumping more. This hurts my heart. I promise that slowing down and pouring the water properly makes a huge difference - it is called a pourover for a reason. So, the quality of coffee you have in your hand when you walk out can be hit-or-miss. The seating area is always dirty and could use a refresh. I know it's a college study spot but that's maybe being embraced a little too wholeheartedly. It feels too much like an old man's living room.

I was spending a nice Spring day in Iowa City and needed an afternoon espresso. I chose a local business rather than the corporate Starbucks a block away. I ordered a single shot espresso and must have gotten behind four customers who order fussy Starbucks like drinks. My shot took forever. It was a single shot BUT it wasn't one ounce. It barely covered the bottom of my cup and it set me back $2. I appreciate the atmosphere and cool pour-over bar but my lacking shot left me still needing a buzz.

  • Khiem L.

I needed a good helping of coffee one morning and a friend who works down the street suggested Java House. I don't like my coffee sweet so I usually just order a black coffee, iced or hot depending on the weather. Despite my simple desires, I am often left unsatisfied. I ordered the Iced Coffee and then I got hungry and bought the Havarti Spinach Sandwich. Definitely worth the price tag for both items. The coffee was a perfectly balanced. Not too acidic, not too sweet. Simple and good. The sandwich was the same way. Light and perfect for a snack in the morning. I did like the patio seating in the area as well. Good food, drink and ambiance. Definitely can not complain.

Extremely overrated Iowa City establishment. Coffee and pastry products are mediocre at best and yet the real mystery is why locals support this coffee shop despite service that always never comes with a smile and the dungeon-like atmosphere with raggedy furniture that is never clean.

I get why Java House is popular. It was one of the first independent coffee shops in Iowa City, and offers a warmer and more inviting experience than Starbucks or (shudder) Caribou. It also does made to order pour over coffee, which is a fantastic change from what you'll get at Starbucks. Fresh coffee is the best coffee. The atmosphere is quirky, which I appreciate. The lamps on the table are a nice touch that add charm, and overall the setting is one that is inviting and unique. I can understand why Java House is routinely listed as one of the best college coffee shops, etc. It's a good place to get work done. And the coffee itself is above average. I've never tried the espresso drinks, but the pour over is well done and the baristas working the pour over station are appropriately attentive. They even have a Kyoto cold press tower on display, but I'm not sure if they ever use it. And yet, I don't come here often, and I've been trying to figure out why. If this were my only option for coffee in Iowa City aside from Starbucks, then I bet I would visit a lot, and be satisfied. But there are multiple options that I prefer in Iowa City (High Ground; Prairie Lights Times Cafe) and Coralville (Waterstreet; Press Coffee Company). One reason could be the beans: at the other locations, I know where the beans come from and how they were sourced, whereas at Java House that information isn't disclosed. It could also be the traffic: at Java House, it often feels like a rush or assembly line, where internet use is curtailed so that the next customer can be cycled through the door. In short, this place is a cool independent coffee shop that reflects the character of Iowa City. But I don't think it's the best coffee, or coffee shop, in town.

I seek fine espresso. This may be one of the better ones in iowa city, but the attitude of the baristas can ruin the experience. Perhaps they're simply short-sighted in understanding the role of "un cafe". Grateful my local Mars Cafe and Zanzibar (Des Moines) provide an excellent espresso experience.

When I lived in IC this was my favorite spot to hang. Crafty baristas making my soy lattes shine like magic. Tasty roasts all of the time and cleanest coffee shop restrooms! Always! This is a real coffee shop experience. I truly miss Java House so much being in DSM now. Don't know what you got til it's gone.

I don't drink much coffee, but if I did, I wouldn't go here to get it because the customer service is so annoying and frustrating. I find myself gritting my teeth if I have to go here. I get the hipster coffee snob vibe they are trying to project, but there is a line that Java House employees definitely cross. Instead of achieving the desired atmosphere, they are just rude as hell. The staff act like they are too good to serve you, which is their job. What isn't their job is being faux intellectual asshats that don't give a crap about customer satisfaction.

Best coffee house. Not only do they offer a selection of great pour over coffees as well as lattes, frappes, iced coffee and tea.

This is the establishment that opened the doors to specialty coffee retailing in Iowa City. Prior to 1994, the best cup of coffee you could get in Iowa City was...well, no one remembers back that far. They offer pour-over brewed coffee--a complete mind-blowing concept in 1994--and a wide range of hand-crafted espresso drinks with plenty of obscure combinations for people who want their coffee to be "an experience" and not just coffee. You can also get tea, Italian sodas (soda water with flavored syrups), and if you hate coffee and tea equally but were dragged there by a friend, you can overpay for a Coke. Generally service is good, however I would not expect to get anything lightning fast if you're pressed for time, especially if you want drip coffee; pour-over means you wait for each cup to brew individually. The management took the liberty of removing my favorite coffee blend for pour-over, Steamboat Bill: a delightfully smooth, medium dark roast that was peerless in the realm of brewed coffee in the universe. I would recommend the American Gothic, a fantastic bold dark roast, or the Giant of the Earth, a generally well-regarded coffee, probably a 73% on the scale of 1% to Steamboat Bill. It hangs artwork from local artists on the wall, and has a mix of different style seating options, and is generally a great place to hang out with a friend, gossip about work, or pretend to study while you eavesdrop on other people's gossip. If you are a European, this is probably as close as you're going to get to the European experience in Iowa City. That's the sitting down and hanging out for 30 minutes part of European coffee. The part where you walk in, order an espresso, drink it and leave in 90 seconds doesn't exist yet in this town. This is American Independent Coffee Shop Style Espresso, which means you'll pay twice as much and it will take twice as long to make it, because they are selling "the artsy espresso experience" and not just a cup of coffee. They will put a bunch of powders and crap on it and draw pretty designs in the foam unless you tell them you left your car running or something. As for the food, you really can't miss with the double chocolate muffin. And by not miss, I mean that you will think about it for the next 3 hours after you've eaten it. They have good slices of cakes, and a good variety of pastries, too. "Peerless. Steamboat Bill was peerless." -- Morgan Freeman

Two of my favorite things about this place: (1) they have a rack of magazines and newspapers for your reading pleasure, and (2) they sell half-priced day-old pastries. Haven't had anything besides a latte to drink (don't drink any other espresso drinks anyway), but so far so good.

  • Aj M.

I love almost everything about this café. They have a good variety of drinks and food. They even give you the option of using almond milk rather than dairy or soy milk. I also love that they sell mugs here, they are very nice and make great gifts! The only reason that I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is always crowded, and that is sometimes an issue. It is usually nearly impossible to find a place to sit down, and once when I was there I had to wait 15 minutes for my drink to be made because there was such a large crowd. Albeit, it was worth the wait.

Cool little spot to meet up with friends for a cup of coffee and conversation. I tried to study in the back area once didn't really workout that well. If you don't like a noisy environment when you study do not come here. It was basically a contest of who could talk more loudly and sound more important. The staff is ok. I can't help but get a sense of smugness when I walk through the door but I am willing to let that slide.

Amazingly good, decor really cool also had some great food options in the place next door. Really enjoyed the art work and photographs in both the coffee shop and lunch joint next door. Friendly service as well. Live in NC so unlikely to be back anytime soon, but glad I made the walk up from the Sheraton hotel just a hop skip and jump away.

This is one of the best coffee houses I've visited. Ever. The Java House is a gem. The coffee quality is top-notch and the service is good. You can choose from an espresso drink or their drip coffee, which is made by the cup so you can choose from a variety of blends and it's always fresh. It's a college town, so be ready for it to be packed with students writing/typing/talking away. There are plenty of places to sit, but spots with a table are hard to come by because of the students. If you don't need to sit and work, take your coffee to go and go people-watch on the ped mall!

Java House has a laid-back, yet friendly, atmosphere. Perfect for individual or group studies. The coffee is great and reasonably priced. I spend entire nights at Java House and have no complaints

This is a hot spot for students during finals week for a reason! There is a big seating area, accompanied with many tables and lamps (although the tables are always packed full with people). the wall decor and music is also very fitting with the cozy environment. I wouldn't necessarily come here for the best cup of joe, but it is a great place to study/catch up with friends/play a good game of scrabble with a date.

I used to come here over 10 years ago when I lived in Iowa City and try to stop in every time I am in town, the one thing I've noticed over all these years is that the shop does not change.. it's good though, I mean if it works don't break it, right? The staff are friendly, the coffee is delicious and there's PLENTY of seating including a room that's quiet that is intended for studying. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

Java House is a staple in Iowa City! I love supporting the local coffee house and their employees enjoy being baristas. They are always nice, helpful, and understanding. There will never be enough seats, but I think that is part of the lure and charm.

  • Lesley R.

I liked this place. It was beautiful inside with a nice, cozy, library style seating experience which I love. It is BIG, lots of choices on where to sit, you can easily plug your computer in (and it does not fall out of the wall socket), get coffee, treats......free WiFi. What more could I want? I can't remember what parking was like exactly but I seem to remember its not super easy to park, but....most students walk on over. Overall....I would definitely go back.

First off, this IS quality coffee, and they know what they're doing. The pour-over coffee is good, if the barista working that station pays attention to it. (They shouldn't let it ever stop dripping at any point.) Second, the espresso is also quality-- and the training to be able to pull a shot or make any espresso drinks is extensive. Third, the atmosphere isn't all that great. Nasty old antique furniture that never gets cleaned. And, the wifi is kind of up & down. Fourth, the snacks are dumb. They're all overly processed junk food. Once, I sent an email to the "comment" section on their website, indicating the lack of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free foods. I never ever ever heard back. To me, this shows a lack of caring about the customer. So, lastly-- the owner/management is nothing to praise. The owner, Tara, never even steps foot in any of the locations, much less even meets her staff or cares to get to know them. If you have to go there, get it to go.

Great spot for some excellent brew! Coffee is made while you wait and is definitely worth the time if it's busy. Good selection from drip to froofy and everything in between. My wife digs the HoCho (Hot Chocolate...yes shortened) and with good reason. Lots of area to spread out to study, sit with a book and listen to music or just catch up with friends. Essentials like free internet and newspapers are present so there's no excuse to be there and be out of the loop. Unlike those that get upset and pretend to actually care where the beans come from, most that enjoy Java House try to make coffee as non-pretentious as possible and just enjoy it. If you get upset by answers like, we're telling where we roast our beans, perhaps this isn't your spot - just know that you'll be missing out on some legit Oro Negro in a great location where you can chillax and get away for a bit.

If you're a writer, reader, coffee drinker or all of the above this is the place to be. Free Wi-Fi, quiet, cozy, couches.... can sometimes get busy and their hours shift depending on the University, but they are serving up great coffee, tea and hot cocoa year round! Great pre or post game date spot.

Yeah, it is a coffee house. Yes, it has drip coffee, individually brewed when you order it. There are different blends of coffee, unlike StarFucks where you get one or two. The teas are excellent, and my cardamom mocha was outstanding. Blah fucking blah. Now that we got the mundane part of the review done, let's get to the REAL reason why this place deserves 5 stars. Holy muthafuckin hell. HOT GUYS GALORE!!! Why haven't any of you muthafuckers told me that Iowa City is hoarding all the hot midwestern men? And they all seem to gather at the Java House? OMG!! I was like a kid in a candy store... or, a homo in a bathhouse. Pick your analogy. Barista, I will take the skinny hipster-ish looking guy along with a side of that hunky frat boy, extra whipped please. And while you are creating this delicious combo, I will also take YOU to go for an after rendezvous. Yes, that is my husband standing next to me. No, he doesn't mind. Faaahhck man, I just want to live in Iowa City. P.S. This review marks my return to swearing and filthy language. Big fucking thank you, Java House!

Mornings before people head into work can get busy. So if you are in a rush, plan accordingly. As parking in DT IC is always a b!tch too. Its down in the PedMall right near Englert theatre. Window seating, tables, lounges, chairs, couches throughout the back and and backroom. Great for WiFi and chillax. However, people fight for laptop outlets. Nice rotating wall art. Nice selection of drips as well as your normal fair of drinks and specialty ones. Average prices. I prefer the All-nighter.. 5 shots of expresso... yeah babyzzzzzz (shake jitter shake) Knowledgeable and friendly baristas. Great eats too. You can also buy beans, grounds, mugs, etc.

What a nice space! So much seating, with tons of big tables perfect for group work, sharing, or spreading out. A nice vibe. I had a very enjoyable latte and enjoyed the whole experience. I could see this place getting busy at peak coffeehouse hours...I certainly would have been here regularly had I been an Iowa student. Also appreciate the salad spot attached/next door. I am impressed.

I'm a coffee snob - didn't mean to be but I am. I asked the barista where the beans were roasted because that stuff is interesting to me, and I was told that it is kept a secret. For any establishment selling anything, it is just odd and suspicious that they don't want to share where the product comes from. You would hope they would have pride about where these beans come from or where they are roasted. They're either ashamed that they buy coffee beans from hotel vendors OR they're going through bean distributors that are paying an unfair wage to coffee farmers. My vote? BAD BUSINESS.

The espresso drinks are the best in town. No one else can get a white mint mocha just right like JH can. And, java coolers make my week. Pastries are delicious, though slightly overpriced. The service is terrible. It's slow and they are often inconvenienced by you being there. Usually impossible to find a table unless you get there super early.

  • chad a.

The coffee is burnt nine times out of ten, and to make things mysterious they will not reveal the origins of their beans. Their teas are spectacular to say the least, as are their baked goods. Every barista there is a sexy emo-type that wants nothing more than to drink the beverages they are slinging and smoke a bit of the gange. As with any coffee house there is a large deposit of smugness floating in the strata. I recommend meeting friends here to count North Face logos, not attending the crunchy live music events and definitely avoid looking at the Lasanskys.

  • G M.

I have fond memories of going to Java House for a croissant and hot chocolate when I was younger but I've decided to never go back to the downtown Java House. It all comes down to bad service. Waiting and watching other people get their coffees before you when they ordered after you is very irritating. The staff seemed way too relaxed and casual. That's how I should feel, not you. You're the one on the clock. First Ave has been good lately but I still feel like it's hit or miss on the speed and quality of service and beverage. Java House seems to be doing well enough without my business so I'll just go elsewhere.

Went to the Washington St. location and also the one inside Prairie Lights. The coffee is pretty good, although the fresh drip should be more carefully done. Not concentrated enough, where the oils at????? I LOVE the Washington St. space, however. Huge, tons of tables, chairs, a great study and meeting place. If only every town had one of these. Great indie/cultured vibe, hold your office hours here, professors!

Overall, great coffee, great service. Misses out on 5 star rating only because it's often too crowded and loud for this rater's expectations of a coffee house.

This is a familiar haunt for the University of Iowa crowd. The coffee here is strong. Very strong. Hold-onto-your-seat strong. The crowd is friendly and the atmosphere is excellent. It is fairly easy to find a seat. The selection of delectable treats is very good and very fresh.

Slowest place to get coffee on earth. Baristas that show zero sense of urgency. Where else can I wait 10 minutes for a drip coffee with 4 people in line? The Java House, with their precious by-the-cup drip system. If you have the patience, they do know how to pull espresso here. But lately I just walk the extra block to Capanna.

As a former Iowan and longtime Californian, I always enjoy coming back to the IC for a macchiato done RIGHT! How can Iowa City have better espresso coffee drinks than almost anyplace in SoCal, and a bookstore (Prairie Lights) that beats ANY in SoCal? And more international students at U of I than almost anywhere else. It's a cool little city!

On my first ever trip to Iowa City one of the first orders of business was to check out the local coffee establishment. Java House was recommended by nearly everyone I talked to (and no wonder - there are more than half a dozen of these spots all over the town and University!) While some have complained of the time lag on the individual drip coffee - I am a HUGE fan. If one is not in a hurry (and why would you be in a hurry in Iowa?) freshly made, strong coffee is a serious bonus to living in a small college town. The atmosphere at the downtown Java House was nice - cozy despite the enormous space. It seemed like a good place to do some work (free WiFi) although it was a bit dark for my taste. The on-campus Java House was more of a take-out type of coffee spot. I tried the "iced chai" which was more of a rich flavored iced cream than anything else. Ah well, you can't have it all. I have since been back to Java House multiple times. The coffee and tea selection is excellent and it's a fantastic place to sit and read. I seem to have missed the hot guys galore, but I will be on the look out next time I'm there!

Of the others who've reviewed Java House, ida n. had it quite right: "Because no one can seem to get the basic formula for a good coffee shop down, this mediocre establishment has managed to survive despite its many problems." Mediocrity prevails! Mediocre coffee (trickled through that entirely unnecessary and frustrating individual drip system--they've got a sign up about how the filters they use are super duper; why not forgo using twelve thousand little filters and brew big pots every few minutes like every other coffee place on the planet?), mediocre prepackaged, loveless sandwiches and pastries (airport food anyone?), and mediocre service (these baristas must bathe in apathy). I quite agree that Java House isn't far off from being a Starbucks, in terms of its corporate and stale vibe, which is a damn shame. IC deserves a better "go to" local coffeeshop than this.

Awwwwwww. . . Hi Java House! Glad to see you're still alive and well. I'd like to formally thank you for helping fuel my sleep-deprived self through my last 2 years of undergrad, which I did at U of I. Oh yes, you housed me well during many hours of reading, Chinese study groups & small meetings with professors. The delightful staff were among my first friends in Iowa City. I was a new arrival from San Francisco, all complete with a shaved head full of wind-salted ideals. I remember snowflakes on eyelashes melting into hot, tasty coffee, warming my insides as I settled into a cozy chair. . .

There are a handful of coffee shops in and around downtown Iowa City now, but when I first moved to the area five years ago, Java House was just about the only game in town. Because no one can seem to get the basic formula for a good coffee shop down, this mediocre establishment has managed to survive despite its many problems. Most annoying about Java House is its ridiculous drip coffee system, which entails individually drip brewing each cup of coffee ordered. As you can imagine, such a system takes a long time--particularly if there are a number of people ordering plain ol' coffee. Amazingly, they do not offer a pre-brewed coffee option for those in a hurry, so be prepared to wait 5 minutes for a simple cup of joe. Equally annoying is Java House's food selection, which includes a number of mediocre pastries made off-site and (in the mornings) some seemingly always-stale bagels that you'll need to choke down as-is since they don't have a flippin' toaster. Overall, just a small-town version of Starbucks with undeserved hipster cred.

Best coffee in town! I love the individual drip...Tanzanian Peaberry is the best. St. Louis Blues has more caffeine. You can always add a depth charge (shot of expresso). Many locations in Iowa City as well as at the University of Iowa Hospitals. : )

I met up with my girlfriend to study at this coffee shop. She was already there with a friend and had been drinking coffee and studying for hours. I walked in and sat with them for 3-4 minutes. I had fully intended on ordering a drink until a staff member stopped by and said "If you aren't going to order anything you have to leave" I did leave and I haven't been back in 7 years. Good job Java House!

The ambiance with the art work and library style furniture makes this a good hangout for studying or doing computer work. The per cup drip coffee is great. I've just finished a cup of sumatra coffee, I think I should have stopped at 1 cup but 3 cups later I'm amped out of my little mind. I feel as if I'm turning into the "Great Cornholio". I think I should go for a run around the block to burn off some of this energy. I digress, this is a great place to come and hang out at. The treats are so, so, but one really comes for the coffee and ambiance. Got to go for that run now.

To answer a previous post, the coffee comes from the Santa Cruz Coffee Company out of California. My understanding is the Santa Cruz Coffee Co also has a patent on the drip brew bar that the Java House uses. I think that the owner Tara Cronbaugh doesn't want other shops to copy her system. Personally, I wish others would copy her so we could get some more good coffee in this world. I've been drinking Java House Coffee since 2001. You can't find a better cup of regular coffee anywhere. The recently changed the roast they serve for their espresso products, and the new roast is a huge improvement. Good atmosphere got me through college.

if you've never been there, the drip coffee service is very impressive. and to follow, the coffee was fresh & excellent. we liked the lighting, ambiance and spaciousness of the space too. noise level is not too loud that you can't study, but not dead that you want to go somewhere else.

I read that Java House has the best coffee in Iowa, so I was trepidatious before my first visit. But it's good coffee, and has good ambiance.

Hands down my favorite place to get coffee or tea. When I think about moving away from Iowa City, I lament the idea of no longer having access to The Java House. Frankly, they have spoiled me. Iced Carmel Cream Lattes are amazing. The only problem with trying to go to the Java House to study, is they are usually so busy you can't find a seat.

Great coffee in the heart of the quintessential midwest college town...what's not to like? The coffee is brewed to order, which I think helps make it good...but that also means service is a bit slow for a regular cup of coffee. Their selection is a plus - they always have a large number of coffees available for brewing. I've found better espresso in Iowa, but it's not bad. The downtown Java Houses are, as expected, overrun by the college crowd...but you can still find a place to curl up and read if you want. Plus, they stay open late!

I've been going to this place for some years when I'm on my yearly trip through Iowa. The first time was the best - they seemed to really care about coffee and it was the first time I'd ever seen the drip-by-the-cup method they use. The place is very cool to sit in and hang out - I love the art they have on the walls and it's cool to have papers available for reading on Sunday. But this year when I was there it was just frustrating. It's now one of those places that doesn't bother to train their people in how an espresso drink should taste and therefore what works and what doesn't. An americano is supposed to be hot - they managed twice to kill the flavor of the espresso by putting in too much water and also made it tepid. My friend's latte was something you might get at a hamburger chain. A sad ending to a former love affair. I might stop in to read the paper and drink iced tea, but my heart now belongs to the real coffee makers just around the corner.

Extremely overrated Iowa City establishment. Coffee and pastry products are mediocre at best and yet the real mystery is why locals support this coffee shop despite service that always never comes with a smile and the dungeon-like atmosphere with raggedy furniture that is never clean.

It's ... so ... Rockin'!

I really like their coffee! They would get 5 stars, but I do believe they should cut a break for refills on coffee. A great place to go if you are not in a hurry.

Awwwwwww. .

It's ... so ...

Best latte I've had. I love my Starbucks, but I have to say this place took the latte crown. Rich coffee, perfect froth.

Awwwwwww. . I remember snowflakes on eyelashes melting into hot, tasty coffee, warming my insides as I settled into a cozy chair. . .

I really like their coffee! They would get 5 stars, but I do believe they should cut a break for refills on coffee. A great place to go if you are not in a hurry.
